Data Breach May Have Exposed Data of 600,000 Patients in Michigan

Hackers may have accessed the names, addresses, social security numbers, and medical information of 600,000 people in Michigan.

The breach affected several Michigan healthcare companies, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, Health Alliance Plan and McLaren Health Care. And the business that hackers targeted is Wolverine Solutions Group (WSG),  a healthcare company that partners with health plans and hospital systems.

Wolverine Solutions Group said they discovered the breach in September when hackers accessed and infected its network with malware. Instead of simply stealing customers data, WSG said, the malicious actors seized control of the company’s records, encrypting them and making them inaccessible to extort the company.

Although, WSG did not state how hackers got access to their network, last month they released an updated public notice to customers stating that affected consumers would receive identity protection services and urged customers to take additional steps to protect themselves.
